I have read all your posts on substrates...

Again my boyfriend has been looking into getting a different substrate for his boa. He currently has carpet in there.

Out of woodchips, is Aspen the best? He does not feed in tank so we are not worried about impaction.

How often should the chips be completely replaced? I know that humidity can cause a buildup of bacterias.

He is more leaning towards woodchips, so please advise.

Newspaper is the best in all aspects, including safe, dust-free, does not grow bacteria easily, but not appealing to the eye. The next best thing to paper, in my opinion, is Aspen. The soiled aspen shavings should be replaced as soon as they are...pooped on. That is the reason for spot cleaning. The tank should be replaced with fresh shavings every month or so. Aspen does not grow bacteria easily, so the 40 or 50% humidity should hold up fine without bacteria.

I agree with Corny, otherwise aspen is one of the best substrates.
