So I was wondering what all the other members do for work... I know some are in school and such, but obviously not everyone is, and after I saw the thread about cars I thought I would post this.

I am the Senior Technician at a small mechanical company, specializing in HVAC. We also get into plumbing, sheet metal and electrical as well. Been a rough winter, lots of ups and downs, and I was sure that things weren't going to turn around this spring. However they did, and I have worked 65 hours this week :S.

Here's a couple pics of some random stuff I've done...
    Tankless water heater:

    So what do YOU do?

I don't have a job yet, I'm a full time student at the Academy of Art University, studying Graphic Design. I'll have my AA at the end of fall semester, and I'll then continue for my BFA (and hopefully MFA) while searching for internships in my field. I'm pretty excited about it!

Lisa: Wow, you've got your hands full! Sounds like you're on top of everything. XD Just saying though, if your kids have already been exposed to all those animals, they'll probably be great with the beardie, if you get it! I should probably post this in your thread that I just replied to. XD

The idea of a tankless water heater is REALLY cool! How does it work? : O

I mow lawns =( I hate my job, but I am going to volunteer at my local zoo starting in June! Can't wait to finally meet people who like the same things as I do!

Do you at least like the smell of fresh cut grass? : D
Wow, it'll be really exciting to work at your zoo! That's going to be great! What zoo is it? (if you don't mind saying?)

You must be BUSY. That is definitely a full time job.

wren, yes tankless water heaters are very cool. If you were to ask anyone I work with, they might tell you I have a strange obsession with them lol. Basically, how they work is they only turn on when you turn a hot water tap on. There is a flow switch that turns it on when the water starts flowing through it. It has a coil inside that circulates the water through, and a large input burner to heat it up to the desired temperature. It is efficient in a few ways, the first and most obvious being that your not heating a whole tank of hot water, all the time, even when your not home. It only comes on when you need hot water. Also, since it heats it according to the demand, you will never run out of hot water. You could take a 4 hour shower and not run out. The second way it is more efficient is you can change the water temperature in a matter of seconds. I have installed a temperature control for it in each bathroom that has a shower/tub in it, so when I am going to use a shower, I just turn the temp down to something like 104 F, or whatever temperature feels right, then only turn the hot water tap on in the shower. So you aren't wasting water by having to temper the hot water (which is usually 120+ degrees) with cold! You only use what you need.

And dogking... that is awesome, you get to be outside in the summer! And also awesome about the zoo! I would love to do that! But the nearest one to me is about 2 hours (with good traffic through toronto... which never happens).

Dogking: Aww, sorry to hear it! Ooh, uhh...Alabama? No wait, Florida, right? Wow, what's the weather like? It must be perfect for ice cream. XD (it's finals week at school this coming week, so I'm too busy to relax and go get ice cream, so of course I have a constant craving for it, ahh!) Does the Jacksonville Zoo have reptiles? I wish our zoo (San Francisco Zoo) had more in the way of reptiles. I went to the San Diego Zoo 3 years back when I visited a friend down there, and they had a komodo dragon. It's nose-tip was against the 3in thick glass, so I put my hand on the other side, and I swear that was the most special moment of the entire day. XD My zoo mostly just has the insect room. Great zoo, I love it, but I wish they had more reptiles!

Mr Andrew: Wow, that is EXCEEDINGLY cool! And it sounds REALLY efficient! Why don't we hear about stuff like that more often? : O Wouldn't it save a lot of water and energy if all water heaters were like that? I hope they go in that direction, because that sounds really good. I feel smarter now, too. XD I learned something, woohoo!

Andrew the tankless water heaters are awesome! I want one so bad but they're pretty darn expensive :-/ Being in a trade like that is awesome though, it's something that's always needed! Please come down and install one in my house? Please? :) I need a new oil burner too... lol, ugh, the one we have is from 1968! A house and all it's necessities are so not cheap! Lol. I'm glad things are looking up for the company and you.

Wren, I orginally wanted to be a graphic designer, that's awesome that you're getting your degree in it! I have no idea how you deal with "critiques"!!! Some professors can be so ridiculously mean and judgmental, I would never be able to hold my tongue, lol.

Dogking, that's really very cool about the Zoo! Any specialty you want to go into? Or all animals in general? And cutting grass is still good money and an honest way to earn it so don't ever think it's not worth it. Everyone has to start somewhere! And believe me, you're getting a lot more satisfaction having a job than being one of the kids who just gets money from their parents, you might not see that now but I swear you will in the future, lol.

Lisa! Wow, I couldn't imagine being a mother of 3 and all the animals! That is definitely a full time job as it is! I don't think a lot of people realize how hard it is... very rewarding though! Happy mother's day! Congrats on the new beardie too :)

I'm new to this forum! But I would like to mention that I am a Veterinary Assistant/Veterinary Receptionist/Veterinary Technician in training (in school). I would be happy to help any members with practically ANY animal questions, as I am required to study all species :p. I am also studying under "Dr. Stahl" this summer, who is a Guru of reptiles here in northern VA. I plan to specialize in exotics upon receiving my license next summer :), and hope to one day run my own reptile/amphibian rescue organization <3.

SitkyPaws: Haha, well, my secret is I grew up with 2 older sisters, both of whom are artistic in their own ways (though my middle sister has always denied her artistic skill, she does amazing jewelry! That's still art!) so I grew up with harsh critiques, and it's served me well at AAU. XD There are some harsh critiques, though. I just had 2 finals yesterday! I did just fine, got positive feedback, all that, but there were a couple students who got mostly negative feedback because their work was just lacking (we were redesigning for amusement parks, etc, I actually designed for the Serpentarium in Lodi, CA, since it's a 'living museum', hehee) and then there was one girl who had a really good thing going last week, but the teacher suggested something for her to do, so it was totally different for finals, and the E in her logo looked like internet explorer and got a lot of negative feedback. I felt bad, because I think she was about to cry, and it was pretty unfair, because she had a GREAT idea going on last week. But the teacher stepped up and said 'hey, this was my idea, and as you all can see, not everyone can have great ideas.' so it wasn't all her. She'll be okay though, all of them will, it's just a matter of what speed everyone learns at. They're all great designers, but not everyone can do every project perfect. I've struggled pretty much at everything. XD
But it's really worth it, and in all honesty, I failed a class (graphic design 1) last semester, and this semester I'm redoing it (my final is tomorrow, I'll be comping a 40pg book on light today! Eeee!!! I'm so excited!) and it was the harsh critiques that made me even more determined to succeed and show everyone I could do it. And I have! Off to comp that book! 8D
What did you go into, when you decided against graphic design? : D It's not for everyone, that's for sure. XD

ELF: That's very awesome! Wow, have a great summer! I bet it'll be hard, but rewarding!

....eh.... Engineering, lol. Just you know... the total opposite from anything artistic, lol.
And I totally forgot to say what I do! I have my degree in Electrical Engineering and my Masters in Business Administration: Leadership and Management. Mostly I do systems engineering at my job though, not too much electrical engineering. I'm a Test Engineer and Project/Program Manager at a test engineering firm. Here's the link to the Test Engineering Dept. at my job. And if you go down to the Armament tab on the left those are mostly my projects. I'm not gunna lie, our capabilities video is pretty cool, lol.

    That is cool StikyPaws!

I have to tell my dad there is an engineer on here lol. He thinks "educated" people aren't interested in reptiles lol. He is a PhD Metallurgical Engineer.

My mother on the other hand is an MD (family medicine) and I have to pull her away from Angus when they are here!

I think my father is just scared of reptiles :p

Andrew, we have a couple Met engineers here too! I brought in one of my chahoua because I was bringing him to one of my friends houses to trade right after work and one of the met engineers was the most interested and made me show him his feet under a microscope, lol. Didn't work too well, my chahoua did NOT want to stay still!

Lol you're not leeching off him, you're just temporarily "home employed" lol. That stinks that you can't find a job by you :( I hope things turn around soon and you get the job at the park!
