My African Fat Tailed gecko has recently started having problems shedding. Shes had problems with stuck skin on her eyelids during her last shed but we're hoping when we use this her new shed will be succesfull. We woke up this morning and we saw that she has started turning white and she's almost fully ready to shed. Our question is: Do we soak her in a warm bath with the shed ease while she is still white with the shed on her so that when she peels it off it will be easy for her, or is it only to be used after she sheds to get the retained shed off (if there is any),and if it is used for her to peel it off esyly on her own is it then safe for her to eat it?

I would go await and let her try to shed on her own first. If she is still having difficulty this time around, then try the bath and shed ease to help remove any pieces that are stuck. The bath should be just slightly warm to the touch of the forearm and should not rise taller than mid-body line. You can enclosure her in a container with water as a sort of 'sauna' effect to help for 20-30minutes.

Shedding issues are usually husbandry related, but can also stem from unusually dry geographic locations, seasonal dryness (often in the winter) or stress/disease. The latter can be excluded if your gecko is alert, active/responsive and otherwise behaving, eating, pooping, etc. normally. You can compensate for dry conditions by giving the gecko a moist hide if you don't already have one.

Can you describe your enclosure setup and your husbandry practices? We may be able to address any minor changes that can be made to help promote easier shedding in the future.
