Im pretty sure that regular old dirt will hold humidity just fine. Let it get too wet, and you will have a muddy mess, but it should be alright.
i walked in my room this morning and the bedding stunk my mom said it was what wet dirt smelt like but it smels like a ded animal!!! what do i do
hello a lil help please ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
the dead animal smell is the smell of its poop. the only thing you can do is change the bedding and whenever your tegu poops remove the poop. the reason it smells so bad is because it eats mostly meat
have you cleaned out the enclosure as well? the longer poop stays in there the more the smell will seep into the substrate
I would imagine that the same properties of the coconut bedding that allows it to retain so much humidty also lends itself to retain a good deal of the poop smell as well. I agree with KliK in regards to the soil, or, a soil made with a peat moss or sphagnum moss blend. You could not only scoop the poop out then but also take all the soil surrounding the poop, this might help with the smell a little... Peatmoss in the soil, or sphagnum will also hold the humidty quite well... Cory
the dirt does well with the humidity as well, but another good thing about it is that if you miss any spots when cleaning out the poop the dirt would help mufle some of the smell
