I dont raise crickets. And once my leo is old enough to eat large ones Ill just by 25 a week. But in the mean time I have over 500 tiny crickets and it has been my experience that they stink really bad. Any tips on how to keep that smell down? All I keep in with the crickets is gut load total bites nothing else. Thanks
The more airflow you can provide the better. And then just keep it as clean as you can. The cleaner, the less stinky. Make sure their water supply and gut load is clean, and keep the enclosure clean and you will have very little stink.
You can do it before putting in new crickets (if you're out), or just move them to a box for the 5 mins it takes to clean it. Same as cleaning your leo's cage.
I recommend putting a metal screen raised off the bottom of the cricket tank. This way they do wallow in there own filth and I have had way less deaths in the crickets. Also, airflow is important. Drill little holes all over the cricket tank. Especially near the bottom and the top. Other than that, I dont think they smell to bad.
I keep my crix in a large critter keeper but they still smell really bad....so I use one of those car freshener thingys....I just hang it about 9 inches above the tank....it works fairly well
Everyday I remove the egg cartons, and food/water supply, use a small wisk and dustpan to remove poop and dead crickets. I already have the case open to get my lizards' food, and it only takes about 5 minutes.
how the heck do u remove 1000 crix a day to wipe up all the sheds and turds? 1000 crix is alot to dodge around whem cleaning up... i like the raised screen idea though nuggular.... but sheds are gonna be a bit of a prob lol cuz in my huge bin i keep mine in... the crix cant climb the walls so they are everywhere!!! maybe when they get down to about 200 or so it'll be easier to clean eh?
Rough up with sand paper the sides a bit, up to about 3 inches from the top, the crickets climb up when you shake out the egg cartons and the floor is left free of crickets so you can wisk/dustpan out the bottom or even wipe it with a damp towels and a dry one. So not use anything in the bottom, except for egg cartons. We have pictures on this website under the care sheets/knowledgbase, then feeders on keeping crickets... we rarely have any dies offs or smell
