I have about 30 silkworms that are about 3" long and I was wondering, how will I know when the need to be moved to a separate container for them to spin their caccoons?

You will notice a couple of things. First you will notice they will stop eating. Secondly, you will see them actually become smaller and slightly yellow/transparent. This is when you will want to move them. If you are unsure you can go ahead and move the real big ones and just provide food in the coccoon container in case they are still eating.
