confused!!!!!!! i read that all dragons have coccidia. if you have a healthy looking dragon and the vet says he/she has a low count of coccidia and is not required to give them albon, just keep an eye on condition. problem----can't pin vet down as to what is a low count????how many oocysts in the microscope window or oocysts per gram of fecal. has anyone had any answers to these questions.
Hi dragonjohn and welcome. Minimal coccidia is not necessary to treat. A low count I beleive is +5 or less in a field at 100X if i remember correctly. Albon does not kill coccidia, it inhibits their reproduction by blocking emzynes that they need to reproduce, and its the bearides immune system that destory them. Good cleaning daily and a healthy dragon can deal with minimal coccidia normally and avoid reinfection that increases the count load. If ours test positve with low counts I just put them on paper towels, bump the heat up 5 degrees and clean poo out as soon as I see them go... 3 weeks later they are usually clear.
thanks for the reply------being new at this responsibility, i wan't try to take care of my dragons, but not over care that might harm than worse. in all honesty, this is what the vet advisees feed, CLEAN, and try to eleminate stress. that treatment until it is needed can be very hard on the dragons. thanks again.......
