This would do better in the Corn & Rat Snake Forum, maybe a Mod will move it there.

It is very rare for a Corn to bite, they are usually very tame. I assume you recently aquired it. But with regularly handling, he should calm down within a few weeks. Just don't handle too much, that will cause stress. Don't handle within 48 hours of the snake eating, and hold him for short periods of time for now (10-15 minutes). A few times a day.

Is it a baby? When did you get it? If you JUST got it, you need to let it be, no handling for about 4days or so. Don't handle it for about 48hrs AFTER FEEDING, and if it is a baby, that's why it's biting. It's scared and doesn't know you or that you don't mean it any harm. Just be patient and work with it. I've heard putting something like a shirt or something that smells like you in the tank for a bit helps.

I have noticed pics (here and other forums) of people using their hands NOT thongs. This will teach the snake to associate your hand with food. This can cause a Corn to strike at you.

Any stress ( being new, not used to handling, poor temperature regulation) can cause unsual behavioral reactions, which with a Corn it is.

Also, as mentioned, a new snake may do that for a few weeks. Another factor is CB or wild. Though most folks don't have wild ones, they can be more aggressive.

    Keep us updated.

thongs to hold the mouse silly.. you really shouldn't be handling your snake during feeding..... I am saying folks HOLD THE MOUSE with their hands.
Can lead to it seeing U as prey eventually and getting nippy.

ok..since it's getting silly... aren't 'tongs' an asian organized crim group?
So would I put the 'thongs' on the 'tongs', have the 'tongs' hold the mice?

    good idea

also feeding in the viv can do the same thing when you open the viv and throw in a mouse, then you open the viv and put in your hand the snake thinks its dinner time lol

Not necessarily. If you handle the snake often enough, they shouldn't. But every snake is different. Every situation is different. It all depends on you and your snake. I personally feed mine in the tank using tongs. He's quite gentle and knows what's what.

Yeah it really just depends on the snake. Every snake's personality is different.

Good stuff Gary... it's been written, posted and advised over and over. With feedings, 2 things

    1. Feed in a feeding area outside the Viv
    a. Substrate can be ingested and lead to impaction
    b. Snake may start to associate your hand in the tank with food and cause strikes over time

    2. Use tongs not your hand.. kinda same reason as 1b

ayasha, I place paper towel underneath the food so the snake does NOT ingest any substrate. And my corn is the most docile thing. He's never bitten me, or even struck. That's why I feed him in his tank. Anywhere else is not a good idea as I have 4 very curious cats. Not every snake and situation is the same. It all depends on YOU, your snake and your personal preference. Only you can be the judge.

ha ha haha....my cat is always around at feeding time. She loves the mice methinks...

Yeah Corns are teh best of them. There is te odd one I read about with a less than rosey personality. It's just one of those 'general' rules. Seems to be more an issue with other snakes as well. My Corn is certainly the easiest going.
I am a big believer in knowing the individual animal.
