I've been hearing snake plant is also favored because of the thick sturdy leaves, so good for climbing as well as hiding.
Do you know if those magnetic mushroom feeder ledges are still being sold? I'm having a hard time finding one, and I'm pretty desperate. Even if I have to make one myself...any tips for building my own?
Have you heard anything about those nighttime glow lights (red & blue) disturbing the cresties? I heard that they can see the colors and it bothers them at nighttime. True or false? Cause I'm thinking I should add some nighttime heat for mine.

I will post a pic of my set-up at some point this coming weekend. I have both mine in an 12x12x18 Exo-terra but plan to upgrade and possibly separate them if they turn out to be opposite sexes or both male.

Thanks Stiky. I'm on the Pangea forums, but I could swear they said the company that makes them has stopped manufacturing them because the magnets are too expensive. But I will check to see what they have. I will also check lllreptiles.com, thanks Joel

 

Yep - I got mine from Mathew Parks over there at Pangea. He's got some killer deals on a variety of supplies and has a max shipping charge of $10, hard to beat!

As for the lights; I've never had an issue using the red bulbs. They behave normally as if the light doesn't exist and I've noted that their pupils stay fairly dilated while the lights are on (unless they are directly beneath the bulb). I would avoid the black lights though, as I have heard of these being problematic. I've been using the red bulbs for viewing and supplemental heat from time to time for the last decade and haven't noticed any issues or behavioral changes.

There certainly are some species that can see light into the infrared spectrum - like bearded dragons. This may be due to the "third eye" on many diurnal species that results from the pineal gland in the brain being located very superficially. But as a general rule, the red bulbs don't tend to bother nocturnal geckos.

As for plants - Mine really enjoy hiding on horizontal perches with something draped over them; such as pothos vine. Youngsters adored snake plant and dracaena compacta although the latter isn't that great for adults IMO.

 

Ohh $10 shipping charge, that IS hard to beat! Thanks for the post, it was very helpful I will stick with a red bulb if I need supplemental heat. Does anyone know where I can find a good scale? I guess Pangea, if I'm going to be ordering a feeder ledge from them anyway....

 

you know with all my time with cresteds ive never used a scale if you get it let me know if you like it

Ok, here's my crested terrarium. There are the silly exo-terra analog therm/hygrometer on the side but I bought it that way, with Topaz. I'm planning to buy a digital one, as well as the feeder ledge soon. Kind of crummy atm, I know. I'm hoping to get started on a nice planted viv soon.

 

ok for one... dont knock yourself... and for two.. it look just fine.. but when you make your next tank, keep me in mind i have a few ideas for ya. ( heres one of them lol) somthing that worked great for me was to give them hideing places up high.. so in one of my early tanks i took the exo-trea rock hide and just siconed it to the side of the tank and added a bit of moss and soon it was the fav hideing place for gecko in that tank... just a very easy idea that can be done in no time

ok i know its not a gecko cage ..(dont shoot me).. but it can does show off one of my cool planted tanks...

 

You can't see it, but right now I have a paper towel roll cut in half wedged between 2 hanging plants on the right side. It's from heavy duty paper towel so the roll is pretty hard/tough and won't fall apart after a few mists. Though I plan to replace it with pvc pipe soon. It's one of my geckos fav hiding places. She also hides between the giant leaves of the floor plant on the left side, almost as often as the paper towel roll hide.

I think that setup looks very nice Lunachick - It looks like hiding spaces are thoroughly covered on both the ground and as mentioned, above and between the leaves of the larger plant. It's too bad cardboard/pulp products like egg flat and paper towel roll are so unaesthetically pleasing in naturalistic vivaria; the juveniles I raised when I was breeding back in the day always loved these structures more than just about anything else.

My only constructive critism would be more physical climbing structures/perching but thats me REALLY nitpicking (something like a diagonal branch or another vine). Your viv looks very well suited to raise these geckos and looks lovely as is; can't wait to see what you ultimately do with any future projects or live plants additions = )

Joel - Your treefrog looks nice, be sure to post pics of the gecko viv with those new plants in it so we can see the end result!

 

Thanks Jeffreh! I am just as nitpicky about my viv. It's still a work in progress, and will be until I am completely happy with it. I welcome all constructive criticism, as I just want the best for my cresties. I will add another vine or perhaps some bamboo shoots, if I can find some good ones. I saw a really neat DIY tutorial for tub tanks and all accessories for it on Pangea - http://www.pangeareptile.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29548 and in it were some DIY soap dish ledges that looked really cool, so I think I will make one or two for my viv, and as I said before, I will get a feeder ledge. I'm so excited to do this

 

the exo tera vines work so well for me.. I dont know what it is about exo-tera stuff that just works for me... so far i think there the best brand out there
