I want to get some night time viewing going on in Chief's cage.
I was just going to get a red light bulb but the lowest wattage i can find is 75w. So i was thinking and after talking to Stiky about it I might go get some red "party" bulbs from walmart that are like 2 dollars each and i can get a 40w so it wont't be nearly as hot as the 75w. But tonight I saw a 40w "moonlight" bulb. Can they see the blue spectrum?

I got a "moonlight" bulb, and I wouldn't recommend it. Geckos can see the blue spectrum it's pretty dim though so it won't disturb you gecko too much but If you plan on viewing your guy the blue bulb won't give you much light. If you can I'd say go with the red bulbs, but be careful about the quality,be sure to replace them if you see any chipping on the red coloring. I live in Canada so any heat is good heat in the winter, during the summer I'd like to rig up some kind of stand for my lamp so I can see him but he doesn't get hot.

I'm extremely cautious about temperatures and my Rhac collection... sadly about 4 years ago I was living in my apartment in Boston and had the AC on in my room with all my rhacs because it was the summer time in the middle of the city up on the 2nd floor apartment... well the power went out while I was away for the weekend and my roommates never go in my room while I'm away unless I ask them to.. Sadly my AC never got turned back on and I lost every single crested gecko in my room. It was heartbreaking and it took me 3 years to get back into Rhacs.

So Please please be VERY CAREFUL about the temps... I don't even risk putting any lighting on them in the summer b/c even with the AC set to 75 during the day and 68 at night if their tanks get heated from the lamps it does cause them to go so dehydrated that they pass away. I even keep the rhac tanks out of the sunlight in the summer time, or if they do get sunlight it's only in part of their tank so they have enough space to get away from the heat.

Ok, sorry, just always like to put that disclaimer out there as to why I'm so crazy about rhac temps :)

Back on topic (sorry for the tangent!) I think that the lower wattage bulb would be best, but if you would like to use the higher wattage one, just back it away from the tank (ie. don't place it right up against the glass or screen, lift it off about a foot or so) and just make sure you keep an eye on your temps for the 1st couple days and make sure the over-all tank temp doesn't go to high. Then I think you should be fine and your crestie happy :) Good luck!

Aw that's such a sad story. I completely understand about the temps though... I found a flourescent type bulb at walmart that is red and is only 13w so Im gonna give it a try see how hot it gets.

Yea it seems like a great bulb. The package says its a 13 watt with lightoutput close to a 60w.
I left it on my cresties cage and it only raised the temp by 3 degrees after like 5 hours.
They claim it lasts up to 5 years so we will have to see.

I'm lovin it. The most it has ever raised temps from room temp is 5 degrees.
Especially now Tennessee's temps have dropped I worry not one bit about the temps in his cage.
