I have a problem with these little pests!!! everytime I place a cricket into my leo gecko's tank I cover them with calcuim and then I take off the hind legs, that ables crickets to jump. They always hide under my leos moss hutt, or inside of it. sometimes they hide under the substrate. how can I stop this from happening?? I dont want to have to take everything out of the tank at every feeding. that would be really annoying.. imput??
what substate r u using? try puttin the crix in somethin that they cant get out of and putt it in the cage. u can also try feeding mealworms, they r easier to keep and r just as good as crix. try feeding one cricket at a time and show the leo that its food by holding the cricket in yur hand and moving it back and forth before the leos eyes.
Mealworms are fattier then crickets and o not hold as much nutrition. So crickets are best. But What I do is take a knew or two off of the cricket with scissors or just rip on off. Yeah that sounds evil. But the crickets wabble and move around. So they get eaten much quicker. But I only do this by the gecko. Still mealworms are healthy and a staple diet. So you could use those. Another thing I do is grab a cricket with tweezers and move it on the above opening of the hut
hey hotdoggy dan, im just curious... wuld the entrails of the cricket come out wen u cut it in half? O and another thing u can do shadowolf (if u have time) is cut the tips of the front legs off with scissors and rip off the back legs. or u can also pinch the part of the back leg close to the body until it crunches, then he will move slower havin to drag his legs. yea mealworms r fattyier but they arent a bad staple for leos. isnt it hard to imagine that a thin hard shelled mealy is fattier than a plump round cricket?but its true!
Actually mealies are not that thin. If they were bent into a circle they would be fatter or fat as a crickets stomache.
as a substrate i am using a towel... then i will be switching to cork when my Geko gets a bit larger.
maybe u shuld use shelf liner, crix cant get under that. and cork is ok just make sure u gecko dont eat any of it, but crix can get under that 2
o well in that case cork wuld be fine, i thought it meant little chips of wood as the substrate. then he culd get it in his mouth or crix culd hide under it, but i guess cork wuld be fine from wat hotgoggy dan said.
Why don't you try slate? Its inexpensive, easy to clean, crix cant get under it, retains heat VERY well. Best of all its the most natural on to use as that is what their natural environment is mostly comprised of.
I use liners for substrate. I'm not an insect person but have you guys realized how much we say "pull the legs off" with no remorse?? imagine if this was an insect forum?? We would be in some trouble there!!
i cringe everytime i hear somebody say it, but then again im one of those people that feels bad about sending even a bug to its death.
